Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to load, secure and unload equipment and materials for drilling. It prepares individuals to identify load specifications and apply the required procedures and techniques for loading, securing and unloading equipment.It applies to those working in assistant driller and driller roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to load, secure and unload drilling equipment and materials
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to load, secure and unload drilling equipment and materials and confirm work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
- 1.5 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
- 1.6 Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
- 1.7 Select tools and equipment to carry out tasks, check for faults and report or rectify within scope of own role
- 1.8 Perform equipment prestart checks and confirm equipment is ready for operation
2. Assess and load equipment and materials
- 2.1 Identify load characteristics and use required loading techniques to move load
- 2.2 Assess load for hazardous and dangerous goods
- 2.3 Assess and confirm that load characteristics and transport capacity meet approved parameters
- 2.4 Erect physical barricades and signage to prevent unauthorised entry to area
- 2.5 Load equipment and materials according to safety requirements and workplace procedures
3. Conduct secure equipment and materials procedures
- 3.1 Check distribution of load and confirm it is even, legal and within safe working capacity
- 3.2 Secure load at approved anchorage points
- 3.3 Confirm load is secure for transport, adjusting load restraint devices as required
- 3.4 Protect load from weather conditions using approved coverage devices
- 3.5 Inspect load for security to travel
- 3.6 Complete and submit all required written documentation according to workplace procedures
4. Assess and unload equipment and materials
- 4.1 Assess location, stowage and remaining load before commencement
- 4.2 Unload equipment and materials according to safety requirements and workplace procedures, using lifting aids and applications as required
- 4.3 Identify equipment and materials requiring special handling
- 4.4 Relocate material, considering heights, weight loading, size and crushability of equipment and materials
5. Conduct housekeeping activities
- 5.1 Clear work area and dispose or recycle materials according to workplace procedures and environmental requirements
- 5.2 Clean and perform maintenance on equipment, confirm suitability for use and address or report issues as required within scope of own role
- 5.3 Manage and report hazards as required
- 5.4 Process records according to task requirements and workplace procedures
