1. Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 1.3 Identify job requirements from specifications
- 1.4 Record and organise information to inform decisions about setting up a workshop
- 1.5 Store all information securely
2. Assess gemstone-cutting workshop requirements
- 2.1 Determine the work to be done and the number of people working there
- 2.2 Determine the specifications for the building, including size, power, water and drainage requirements
- 2.3 Identify the consumables, fixtures and fittings needed for the workshop
- 2.4 Identify essential and desirable machinery needed for a workshop
- 2.5 Investigate the work health and safety issues for the workshop and determine control measures required
- 2.6 Establish the environmental protection requirements and determine compliance measures required
3. Identify suppliers of machinery and consumables and establish set-up cost
- 3.1 Identify manufacturers and suppliers/agents for new and second-hand lapidary equipment
- 3.2 Compare prices, advantages and disadvantages of obtaining new and second-hand equipment and machinery
- 3.3 List suppliers of consumables and compare prices
4. Determine finances required to set up the workshop
- 4.1 Obtain estimates of the cost of services required to set up the workshop
- 4.2 Develop a draft budget and cash flow for the first year of operation
- 4.3 Identify and investigate sources of finance and repayment schedules
