Description
This unit covers the competency required to conduct an exterior search of the underwater component of a ship's hull.Note: This Unit of Competency relates, in part, to the existing standards of the Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme (ADAS). All information was correct at the time of development of this Unit of Competency; however, any diver seeking ADAS accreditation should consult ADAS and not rely on the information contained in this unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Define the search area
  • 1.1 Search task and worksite data are determined and analysed.
  • 1.2 Search plan is developed consistent with the dive plan.
  • 1.3 Search control devices are prepared and positioned on the hull as required.
2. Demonstrate search techniques
  • 2.1 Manual search methods are applied in poor visibility while guided by fixed search lines.
  • 2.2 Visual search methods are applied in good visibility.
3. Refurbish search site and equipment
  • 3.1 Search control devices are recovered without damaging the vessel.
  • 3.2 Search control devices are disconnected, refurbished and stowed.

Assessment must confirm the ability to work safely throughout the operation.
Consistency in performance
Competency should be demonstrated during a search to locate an object (such as a mine) that is attached to a ship’s hull (and is of a minimum underwater length of 30 m).
The search is to be conducted under poor visibility (max 0.5 m) demanding the use of manual search techniques.
Context of and specific resources for assessment
Context of assessment
Competency should be assessed in the ocean over a range of oceanic, diurnal and nocturnal environments supported by questioning on shore or aboard vessels.
When practicable, assessment should relate to the diver’s vocational focus.
Specific resources for assessment
Access to a complete range of diving, safety and accessory equipment; and a ship.
