Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select and apply hardware to new or refurbished furniture or cabinetry. Furniture may be made from any material and may be freestanding or fitted, including kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. Workers with this competency follow established procedures in timber technology industries such as cabinet and furniture making. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for task
- 1.1 Identify task requirements from work documentation
- 1.2 Identify and follow work health and safety requirements
- 1.3 Select hardware to meet design specifications
- 1.4 Select tools to meet task requirements and check for safety and functionality
2 Attach hardware
- 2.1 Lay out hardware items in accordance with design
- 2.2 Take measurements to determine precise location and correct alignment for hardware
- 2.3 Use machinery in accordance with workplace procedures
- 2.4 Secure hardware using tools suited to hardware and material to which it is being attached
- 2.5 Inspect completed work for compliance with quality requirements and rectify any deficiencies
3 Finalise task and maintain equipment
- 3.1 Clean work area, safely dispose of waste and identify items for recycling in accordance with workplace procedures and environmental standards
- 3.2 Clean equipment and complete routine maintenance in accordance with workplace procedures
- 3.3 Identify, tag and report faulty equipment in accordance with workplace procedures
- 3.4 Complete task documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
