Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to grade flat or 2D patterns used for production of garments with basic style features. The grading process may be manual or digital.This unit applies to individuals working in situations where discretion and judgement may be required in planning and selecting processes, procedures or outcomes.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to grade patterns
- 1.1 Identify job requirements from work specifications
- 1.2 Prepare workstation and equipment in accordance with work health and safety requirements
- 1.3 Identify required grading system by considering style and fabric characteristics which influence grading
- 1.4 Identify measurements of base size and grade requirements from specifications
- 1.5 Calculate number of sizes in grading and establish appropriate grade increments between sizes to create grade rule table
- 1.6 Select appropriate grade plan and construct accurate grade rule table
2. Grade patterns
- 2.1 Determine stacking or outlay requirements, including direction
- 2.2 Grade pattern in accordance with grade rule table
- 2.3 Identify required stack points or lines
- 2.4 Preserve integrity of pattern attributes during grading
- 2.5 Accurately label all pattern pieces with pattern marking symbols
- 2.6 Check pattern for accuracy and make required corrections
- 2.7 Complete documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
