Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to operate a heavy production mobile chipping unit to chip logs or tree lengths on-site during forest harvesting operations. The unit applies to those who operate a heavy production mobile chipping unit in a forest environment.Licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit in some states and territories at the time of publication, and may differ according to jurisdiction.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for chipping
  • 1.1 Review work order and clarify with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Identify and assess type and quantity of timber to be chipped to meet requirements for work order and safe working conditions.
  • 1.3 Select equipment to meet to work requirements and check for operational effectiveness.
  • 1.4 Plan chipping activities in line with site procedures and environmental and heritage concerns
  • 1.5 Position and set-up chipper to ensure stability and to effectively chip wood
  • 1.6 Communication with others is established and maintained in line with WHS requirements.
2. Chip timber
  • 2.1 Carry out pre-operational checks on the heavy production mobile chipper.
  • 2.2 Start up chipper according to safe workplace requirements
  • 2.3 Detect site hazards associated with chipper and plan safe operating techniques to minimise risk.
  • 2.4 Direct timber into the chipper at a rate applicable to the capacity of the machinery and chip size specified in the work order.
  • 2.5 Direct chipped timber into the back of a truck or other modes of transportation or for stockpile.
  • 2.6 Establish and maintain communication with truck driver to ensure efficient and safe loading of chipped materials
3. Carry out machine operator maintenance
  • 3.1 Lock-out chipper and shut down if required, in line with site procedures.
  • 3.2 Conduct visual inspection to identify issues and faults.
  • 3.3 Remove and replace worn components as required to fulfil the work order.
  • 3.4 Clean, check and carry out routine maintenance tasks on chipper.
  • 3.5 Record and report chipper operations, faults and maintenance activities.
