Description
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to finish repairs made to heavy off-the-road tyres. It applies to tyres defined by AS 4457.2-2008 Earth-moving machinery - Off-the-road wheels, rims and tyres - Maintenance and repair - Tyres (or its replacement) or similar tyres.This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.The unit principally refers to the practical, theoretical and technical knowledge and well-developed skills required in situations that require some discretion and judgement. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for job
  • 1.1 Move tyre into suitable position for finishing
  • 1.2 Secure tyre ready for finishing
  • 1.3 Inspect tyre to ensure it meets required standards
  • 1.4 Select and prepare required equipment according to equipment specifications
  • 1.5 Check and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
2. Finish repaired tyre
  • 2.1 Cut and buff surface to meet required standard
  • 2.2 Reshape tread according to job requirements
  • 2.3 Brand tyre to meet required standard
  • 2.4 Finish surface to meet required standard
  • 2.5 Complete final inspection of tyre and repairs to ensure job has been done to required standard
  • 2.6 Apply sealing compound around patch area
3. Complete job
  • 3.1 Move tyre to dispatch area according to workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Accurately complete required paperwork
  • 3.3 Apply waste management strategies to collect and segregate scrap, trim and other materials according to workplace procedures
4. Anticipate and solve process control variances
  • 4.1 Recognise existing or potential process control variances and their causes
  • 4.2 Determine, prioritise and implement remedial and preventative actions based on identified issues and causes
  • 4.3 Monitor process control variances and corrective actions taken until resolved
  • 4.4 Accurately maintain records and logbooks
