Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to operate rollers/compactors underground in Metalliferous mining.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for underground roller/compactor operations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply mobile plant and equipment documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Select, and check for faults, equipment and/or attachments for work activities
  • 1.6 Inspect and assess site conditions, determine if scaling is required and take action according to site requirements
  • 1.7 Carry out start-up procedures
  • 1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
  • 1.9 Identify and use approved dust suppression and extraction methods
  • 1.10 Ensure work area is well ventilated before entry
2. Operate roller/compactor, underground
  • 2.1 Carry out start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
  • 2.2 Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity
  • 2.3 Drive and operate equipment within recommended speed, engine capability and limitations
  • 2.4 Engage and disengage the compacting device
  • 2.5 Identify, remove and manage contaminants
  • 2.6 Monitor and manage equipment performance using appropriate indicators, and ensure efficiency of operations
  • 2.7 Assess materials and site conditions, and apply appropriate operating techniques
  • 2.8 Compact to required degree of compaction
  • 2.9 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety to self, others, plant and equipment
3. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 3.1 Prepare machine for maintenance
  • 3.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
  • 3.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
  • 3.4 Return machine to service
  • 3.5 Process written maintenance records
4. Conduct housekeeping activities
  • 4.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
  • 4.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
  • 4.3 Manage/report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
