This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to monitor safety health and environment (SHE) on a site, adhering to defined policies and procedures to ensure own safety and that of others, together with protection of the environment. The unit includes monitoring of environmental management systemsThe unit applies to those a wide range of roles across all industry sectors.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Monitor safety, health and environment (SHE) practices
  • 1.1 Monitor tasks in a safe manner in line with legislative requirements and environmental management systems, organisational policies and procedures
  • 1.2 Monitor organisation of duties, equipment and materials in line with SHE requirements and organisational procedures
  • 1.3 Establish and maintain communication with others in line with SHE requirements
2. Monitor and assess risks
  • 2.1 Monitor and assess hazards in the work area, and report to designated personnel.
  • 2.2 Monitor and assess SHE issues and risks in the work area, and report to appropriate personnel
  • 2.3 Analyse work practices and processes to identify areas for improvement in relation to SHE issues and risks
  • 2.4 Determine and implement changes to work practices and processes to improve SHE concerns
  • 2.5 Monitor workplace procedures and work instructions for controlling risks and protecting the environment
  • 2.6 Check SHE or incident reports to ensure they are in line with workplace procedures and State or Territory legislation
3. Monitor emergency procedures
  • 3.1 Monitor appropriate personnel verification in an emergency.
  • 3.2 Monitor workplace procedures for dealing with own safety, safety of others, environmental incidents, accidents, and emergencies within scope of responsibilities
  • 3.3 Monitor emergency and evacuation procedures after an emergency, and make suggestions to appropriate personnel about lessons learnt and changes required
  • 3.4 Record and report SHE procedures in line with workplace procedures
4. Monitor environmental procedures
  • 4.1 Monitor and record community and organisational environmental goals
  • 4.2 Monitor training and operational controls to ensure they are in line with workplace procedures
  • 4.3 Check and monitor environmental measures for corrective action
  • 4.4 Integrate care for the environment into all day-to-day activites
  • 4.5 Conduct progress reviews to assess impact on the environment
