Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to establish and complete repair requirements for a range of jewellery items.Where an estimate or quotation for repair is required to be produced unit MSTGN3023 Estimate and cost jobs should also be selected.Where setting of jewellery is required unit MEM19007 Perform gemstone setting should also be selected.If replacement components need to be manufactured for the repair, then appropriate units should also be selected.Band: This unit has dual status and is to be regarded as both a Specialisation Band A unit and Specialisation Band B unit for progression to C5 (AQF level V).Unit Weight: 6

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine job requirements
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • 1.4 Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, job sheets or work instructions
2. Assess item condition
  • 2.1 Identify item characteristics, construction and composition
  • 2.2 Assess condition of item and the nature and extent of damage in accordance with SOPs
  • 2.3 Obtain assessment information and advice as required
3. Establish repair requirements and materials
  • 3.1 Establish repair requirements, options and recommended actions in accordance with SOPs and factors impacting on feasibility of repair
  • 3.2 Convey recommended repairs and options to client and confirm required repair work
  • 3.3 Select appropriate repair techniques in accordance with item construction and condition
  • 3.4 Obtain or manufacture replacement components in accordance with SOPs
4. Carry out repairs
  • 4.1 Select and prepare tools, equipment, materials and consumables for job requirements
  • 4.2 Identify and address unforeseen effects of the repair work and minimise evidence of the repair
  • 4.3 Ensure repaired item conforms to original specifications and identified customer requirements
5. Finalise repair
  • 5.1 Package or present finished item and store safely
  • 5.2 Complete documentation of repair work
  • 5.3 Collect unused and excess materials and store
  • 5.4 Clean work area, tools and equipment and store in accordance with SOPs
