This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to assist cable tool drilling in Drilling.This unit is appropriate for those working in drillers assistant roles.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for assisting with cable tool drilling
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply assist with cable tool drilling, documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear a personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
  • 1.6 Load, unload and move tools and equipment
  • 1.7 Identify safety precautions for handling potentially contaminated samples
  • 1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Support the cable tool drilling process
  • 2.1 Fit/remove and measure correct bits to/from the tool string
  • 2.2 Layout tools and equipment in readiness for drilling
  • 2.3 Inspect tool string components and replace worn/damaged components
  • 2.4 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
  • 2.5 Operate rod/casing handling equipment
3. Handle samples
  • 3.1 Remove samples from barrels
  • 3.2 Take precautions to ensure no surface contamination of samples
  • 3.3 Carry out collection of sludge samples
4. Mix drilling fluids
  • 4.1 Check labels and read and interpret safety information/ hazard codes
  • 4.2 Mix drilling fluid
  • 4.3 Carry out storage of drilling mud components and additives
  • 4.4 Perform basic tests on fluids and record/report the results
5. Carry out basic maintenance of tools and equipment
  • 5.1 Perform inspection and checks on serviceability of drilling components
  • 5.2 Perform inspections and routine checks on ancillary equipment
  • 5.3 Complete housekeeping activities
  • 5.4 Process records
