This unit covers the skills and knowledge to apply pattern specifications to the production of saddlery products.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Interpret pattern specifications
- 1.1 Information about customer requirements is accessed
- 1.2 Pattern specifications are accessed and saddlery product is identified
- 1.3 Pattern specifications are interpreted and compared against customer requirements
- 1.4 Pattern specifications are compared against quality requirements of the enterprise, the industry and the client
- 1.5 Customisation requirements are identified
- 1.6 Limits on own expertise are recognised and any additional expertise required for production is identified
2 Prepare for production
- 2.1 Pattern is customised from existing pattern as appropriate
- 2.2 Leather requirements are identified from customer and pattern specifications
- 2.3 Production tasks are identified
- 2.4 Production tools and equipment are selected and prepared
- 2.5 Personal Protective equipment is identified and applied
- 2.6 Leather is selected and examined for quality and faults
- 2.7 Work area is set up in accordance with specifications and workplace procedures
3 Produce saddlery product
- 3.1 Leather is correctly laid out and measured
- 3.2 Leather is marked according to pattern
- 3.3 Leather markings and measurements are checked against pattern to ensure accuracy
- 3.4 Leather is cut to pattern
- 3.5 Leather is stitched by hand or machine
- 3.6 Stitching is tested for strength and accuracy
- 3.7 Product is trimmed
- 3.8 Embossing and other design elements are applied
- 3.9 Work is conducted according to OHS practices
4 Finish production
- 4.1 Product is finished by hand or machine
- 4.2 Product is checked for quality
- 4.3 Product is checked against specifications and reviewed with customer to ensure requirements are met
- 4.4 Production is finalised, and housekeeping and relevant documentation completed
