Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct slurry sealing operations in Civil construction.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to conduct slurry sealing operations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply slurry sealing operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Obtain, interpret and implement traffic management signage requirements
  • 1.6 Determine material to be laid and handling procedures to be employed
  • 1.7 Select and check for faults plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • 1.8 Confirm and apply environmental protection and safety requirements
  • 1.9 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Prepare mix materials
  • 2.1 Confirm material availability for slurry seal operations
  • 2.2 Check paving unit to ensure correct calibration of metering devices to mix specification
  • 2.3 Clean and test spreader box for correct operation
3. Prepare surface for slurry application
  • 3.1 Apply surface protection
  • 3.2 Note surface defects and rectify or treat during sealing operation
  • 3.3 Clean and clear work area of loose stones, oil or other contaminants
  • 3.4 Set out work area ensuring a straight edge is maintained along kerbs, shoulders and through intersections
4. Apply slurry seal
  • 4.1 Maintain consistency of mix
  • 4.2 Mix spread
  • 4.3 Achieve surface finish
  • 4.4 Ensure joints are neat with no overlapping or excess materials showing
  • 4.5 Use hand spreading to cover small or difficult areas
5. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 5.1 Prepare machine for maintenance
  • 5.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
  • 5.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
  • 5.4 Process written maintenance records
6. Clean up
  • 6.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
  • 6.2 Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
  • 6.3 Carry out housekeeping requirements
