Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to inspect and maintain shafts and structures in Underground Coal and Metalliferous mining.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements vary between States, Territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to inspect and maintain shafts and structures
- 1.1 Access, interpret and apply service and maintenance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant.
- 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.3 Identify, address and report potential hazards, risks and environmental issues and implement control measures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the work activity
- 1.5 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
- 1.6 Set up and schedule work
2. Conduct shaft maintenance
- 2.1 Conduct work safely and efficiently
- 2.2 Perform all isolations and tagging out
- 2.3 Establish communication system and perform checks
- 2.4 Communicate with winder driver and others involved and ensure clear and safe maintenance operations
- 2.5 Ensure winder is placed in inspection/maintenance mode, including "inching"
- 2.6 Perform inspection and maintenance work from top of conveyance
- 2.7 Carry out maintenance
- 2.8 Complete inspection/maintenance and record any follow-up actions
- 2.9 Ensure all safety devices are in back in place and tags removed before shaft is returned to service
- 2.10 Remove overhead protection and guard rails
- 2.11 Ensure housekeeping standard is met and area is clear of foreign materials, communication equipment and tools
3. Conduct post-maintenance activities
- 3.1 Complete all required documentation
- 3.2 Ensure shaft operations and structures are tested and monitored
- 3.3 Advise appropriate personnel when maintenance activities are concluded
