Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to use individual fleece measurements to prepare wool for sale as required by the workplace’s classing strategy.This unit applies to individuals who take responsibility for their own work and for the quality of the work of others within known parameters. They provide and communicate solutions to a range of predictable and sometimes unpredictable problems.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures and work health and safety (WHS) practices according to state/territory regulations, legislation, codes and standards that apply to the workplace. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Gather objectively measured data
  • 1.1 Arrange shed or wool room layout for efficient sampling operation
  • 1.2 Identify potential and existing work health and safety (WHS) hazards, assess risks and implement control measures
  • 1.3 Collate available information on fleece and wool
  • 1.4 Select an appropriate representative sample for testing according to workplace procedures
2. Analyse collected data
  • 2.1 Review and evaluate available data to determine possible lines
  • 2.2 Analyse collected data against the industry code of practice
3. Analyse market trends
  • 3.1 Review information produced by industry to determine market trends
  • 3.2 Evaluate the potential for movement in prices against available data
  • 3.3 Determine the extent to which discounts are applied
4. Prepare wool to meet requirements of the market
  • 4.1 Use available information to prepare the wool to best advantage
  • 4.2 Package wool in the most appropriate manner according to workplace requirements
  • 4.3 Complete wool book requirements to meet the requirements of the industry code of practice
  • 4.4 Communicate specific and detailed requirements for wool preparation and classing to wool harvesting staff
