Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify music notation conventions and to play or sing music from simple written music notation.The unit applies to those who are instrumentalists and vocalists, and use music reading skills in a performance context. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Explore conventions of music notation
- 1.1 Identify simple rhythmic, melodic and harmonic notation symbols and structures
- 1.2 Examine symbols and notation conventions applicable to form and music
- 1.3 Identify dynamics and expression marks, and symbols and their meanings
2. Perform notated music on instrument or vocally
- 2.1 Confirm performance requirements in consultation with required personnel
- 2.2 Identify exercises and repertoire for practising music reading skills in collaboration with required personnel
- 2.3 Develop personal practice schedule for developing music reading skills in line with performance requirements
- 2.4 Perform music accurately from basic written notation
- 2.5 Interpret simple melodic and rhythmic notation symbols and structures as required
- 2.6 Interpret harmonic symbols and structures as required
- 2.7 Follow music patterns, symbols and structures as indicated
- 2.8 Interpret dynamics, expression marks and symbols
3. Evaluate music reading skills
- 3.1 Seek feedback from required personnel on performance of notated music and develop strategies to improve skills
- 3.2 Establish plan for development of music reading skills
