Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare and install timber strip flooring, ply and reconstituted timber sheet product directly onto joists, install decking directly onto joists and remove and replace boards in an existing timber floor directly onto joists.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Interpret timber flooring installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
- 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
- 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Gather the timber flooring material and confirm its species, grade, size, quantity and quality against job instructions
- 1.5 Check and confirm the timber flooring material’s moisture content is suitable for site conditions according to workplace procedures
- 1.6 Gather fasteners and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to manufacturer instructions
2. Cut, fit and fasten the timber flooring
- 2.1 Erect signage and/or barricades according to workplace procedures
- 2.2 Inspect the joists for flatness, structural integrity and cleanliness and confirm they are suitable for installing the timber flooring, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 2.3 Measure, mark and cut timber flooring materials to length and size according to job instructions, to minimise waste and joints and to ensure an efficient, quality installation
- 2.4 Install the timber flooring according to the manufacturer instructions
- 2.5 Install finishing strips appropriate for the type of timber flooring
- 2.6 Check the timber flooring is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
- 2.7 Make any necessary preparations for sanding and finishing the timber flooring according to job instructions
3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
- 3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
- 3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
- 3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
