Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to analyse and report on a clinical coding audit.This unit applies to highly experienced clinical coders who have the expertise to audit clinically coded data. Work may be performed as an individual or as part of a team under limited supervision.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Compile clinical coding audit results.
  • 1.1. List findings for each patient episode of care audited.
  • 1.2. Analyse audit findings to determine audit outcomes.
  • 1.3. Calculate and report error rates according to organisational requirements.
2. Prepare audit report.
  • 2.1. Document purpose and methodology for audit.
  • 2.2. Document audit findings including graphs and charts detailing error rates.
  • 2.3. Identify and document common errors and areas for improvement.
  • 2.4. List strategies and make recommendations for improving coding quality and direction of future audits.
  • 2.5. Produce audit report and summarise findings maintaining confidentiality on individual coding results.
3. Provide feedback.
  • 3.1. Provide feedback to the clinical coder on their audit results.
  • 3.2. Participate in formal and informal meetings with management to discuss the audit report according to organisational procedures and protocols.
  • 3.3. Manage audit dispute resolution process.
