This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to monitor plant operations for coal preparation in the Coal Mining. This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of this unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and Prepare for rail dispatch operations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply rail dispatch documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Receive, interpret and confirm dispatch requirements
  • 1.3 Inspect and test run rail dispatch systems components and ensure they are safe and functioning
  • 1.4 Carry out pre-start and start up procedures
  • 1.5 Coordinate issues with others involved in or affected by the operations
  • 1.6 Transfer to or confirm as being present the required quantity and quality of coal product in the bulk loader/bin
  • 1.7 Prepare documentation and records for the dispatch operation in accordance with site/rail/port authority procedures
  • 1.8 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.9 Identify, address and report potential hazards, risks and environmental issues
  • 1.10 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Load and dispatch coal
  • 2.1 Confirm train identification and identify specific loading requirements and patterns
  • 2.2 Establish communications with the train operator and supporting plant/equipment operators prior to commencement of loading
  • 2.3 Direct train movement and positioning for bulk loader
  • 2.4 Load train to specification
  • 2.5 Complete and process written loading records in accordance with site/rail authority requirements
  • 2.6 Carry out shut down procedures
