Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to research, prepare and present a documented waste management plan. It includes reviewing waste practices to identify waste management options, assessing the feasibility of options and formulating waste management activities to achieve waste management objectives.A person who achieves this unit of competency is able to use specialised knowledge to complete routine and non-routine tasks and deal with predictable and sometimes unpredictable problems.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Identify and clarify waste management objectives and site requirements
  • 1.1 Consult with relevant persons to obtain information to clarify current waste practices, waste management objectives and site requirements.
  • 1.2 Review workplace policies and procedures, legislation and regulations against waste management objectives to confirm compliance requirements.
  • 1.3 Clarify requirements for efficient waste storage and transportation to account for road congestion and environmental impact.
  • 1.4 Record information gathered confirming client needs and expectations and waste management requirements.
2 Investigate options and develop waste management plan.
  • 2.1 Assess waste practices to identify waste management activities that meet objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • 2.2 Research options to address identified activities, assess feasibility and select preferred options.
  • 2.3 Prepare action plan incorporating achievable waste management activities that meet workplace and regulatory requirements.
  • 2.4 Prepare strategy to manage hazards and risks associated with waste management plan.
  • 2.5 Identify additional procedures to be developed to meet requirements of waste management plan.
  • 2.6 Calculate timeframes, resources and equipment required to implement waste management plan according to workplace requirements.
3 Present waste management plan.
  • 3.1 Document waste management plan according to workplace and regulatory requirements.
  • 3.2 Present waste management plan to relevant persons according to workplace requirements.
  • 3.3 Store waste management plan in a manner that ensures confidentiality and future retrieval according to workplace requirements.
