Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain and service shearing handpieces as part of a shearing operation.This unit applies to individuals who work under broad direction and take responsibility for their own work, including limited responsibility for the work of others. They use discretion and judgement in the selection and use of available resources.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify worn and faulty handpiece components and facilitate their repair
- 1.1 Assess the performance of the handpiece from personal observation and team member feedback
- 1.2 Check and clean comb bed, cups and fork yokes in line with manufacturer specifications
- 1.3 Identify worn and faulty handpiece components
- 1.4 Access appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and fit correctly
- 1.5 Install minor repair kit components
- 1.6 Check faulty comb beds and assess the required scope of repairs
- 1.7 Determine if there is a need for a technician to repair the fault, and if so, make appropriate arrangements
2. Service handpiece
- 2.1 Carry out repairs that do not require the services of a technician according to manufacturer specifications and work health and safety (WHS) policies
- 2.2 Adjust handpiece components to maintain operational performance according to manufacturer specifications
- 2.3 Lubricate handpiece and replace components requiring periodic replacement
- 2.4 Identify wear and tear on handpiece in terms of effects on performance
- 2.5 Install safety components and check before operation of the handpiece
- 2.6 Run and check handpiece prior to use to determine safe operational performance
