Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to coordinate the erection, alteration, repair and dismantling of scaffolding/equipment in workshops, factories, manufacturing plants and warehouses, and applies to individuals coordinating a scaffolding team or employed in a supervisory capacity.Complex scaffolding means intermediate scaffolding and above as set out the legislative requirements in each state and territory. The major difference between the complex and basic scaffolding is the height of the working platform and certain types of scaffolding and configurations.Where interpretation of technical drawings is required unit MEM09002 Interpret technical drawing should also be selected.Where the selection and use of engineering measurement is required unit MEM12023 Perform engineering measurements should also be selected.Where the selection and use of power tools/hand held operations is required unit MEM18002 Use power tools/hand held operations should also be selected.Depending on the equipment being used a high risk work licence may be required and users should check with the relevant authorities.Band: AUnit Weight: 4

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Determine job requirements
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • 1.4 Interpret site plans, scaffolding/equipment designs and drawings to industry practices, as necessary
2 Plan and coordinate erection of complex scaffold/equipment
  • 2.1 Inspect work area to identify hazards and implement appropriate prevention/control measures to avoid hazard
  • 2.2 Prepare erection site to meet job and safety requirements
  • 2.3 Place necessary signage and barriers in appropriate position
  • 2.4 Coordinate scaffolding/equipment erection in accordance with acceptable safe work practices, Australian Standards, state or territory legislative requirements and equipment manufacturers' requirements
  • 2.5 Inspect completed scaffolding/equipment for safety and compliance with design, operational and statutory requirements
3 Coordinate alterations and repairs of complex scaffold/equipment
  • 3.1 Confirm and understand scope of alteration/repair
  • 3.2 Inspect existing scaffolding/equipment and determine alterations/repairs
  • 3.3 Determine materials, equipment and tools required for alterations
  • 3.4 Determine existing or new load requirements using load tables
  • 3.5 Coordinate alteration/repairs in accordance with safe work practices, Australian Standards and equipment manufacturers' requirements
  • 3.6 Inspect alterations/repairs for safety and operational requirements
  • 3.7 Report work completion to appropriate personnel and record
4 Inspect erected complex scaffold/equipment
  • 4.1 Inspect the critical structural and safety areas of the scaffolding/equipment for damage, corrosion and wear
  • 4.2 Check scaffolding/equipment and structure against the type of scaffolding/equipment and structure specified in the plan
  • 4.3 Complete inspection log and report potential safety and design/structural hazards for rectification
5 Coordinate dismantling of complex scaffold/equipment
  • 5.1 Coordinate removal of scaffolding/equipment from site in accordance with procedures and critical structural and safety requirements
  • 5.2 Coordinate site clearance and remove surplus material, equipment, tools and debris and leave site in safe and operational state
  • 5.3 Report work completion to appropriate authority
