Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to construct blocks to develop patterns for garments that require advanced styling such as structured tailoring, evening wear, bridal wear, corsetry, complex or experimental drape, complex patternmaking or significant detailing.This unit applies to patternmakers who work in accordance with existing specifications using discretion, judgement and problem solving to achieve work outcomes.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to construct complex blocks
  • 1.1 Confirm garments in range and obtain profile of target market
  • 1.2 Interpret and clarify design drawings, specifications and intended purpose of the design with designer
  • 1.3 Evaluate and record ease requirements and size and fit model specifications
  • 1.4 Consider fabric characteristics and performance, trims and finishing of the design
2. Construct complex blocks
  • 2.1 Select appropriate garment block construction methods and techniques
  • 2.2 Analyse measurements and characteristic of fit model and enter data and document formulas used
  • 2.3 Construct block using patternmaking technical skills and check to ensure compliance with design specifications and standards
3. Verify blocks for accuracy and suitability
  • 3.1 Select and use manual or digital methods for checking the block
  • 3.2 Verify correct proportion, fit and balance and suitability of garment, and make required adjustments
  • 3.3 Label final blocks and check for accuracy and completeness of all necessary information to ensure compliance with specifications
4. Develop block portfolio
  • 4.1 Present blocks in preparation for development of style patterns according to workplace requirements and cost efficiency
  • 4.2 File and store blocks according to appropriate criteria and complete all required documentation
