Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to stack material, manually build packs and apply strapping and wrapping. Work is completed in a wood products factory setting.The unit applies to Sawmill Worker, Production Worker, Manufacturing Assistant.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify material
  • 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
  • 1.3 Inspect and check the type, quantity and quality of material to be packed for grading and labelling.
2. Build packs manually
  • 2.1 Build packs in line with organisational safety procedures.
  • 2.2 Check bearers and protective strips for consistent thickness and damage.
  • 2.3 Place specified bearers, spacing sticks and protective strips squarely, evenly and consistently.
  • 2.4 Check material tallies against labelled or expected content.
  • 2.5 Dispose of faulty material and bearers in line with environmental protection practices.
  • 2.6 Label finished packs in line with organisational procedures.
  • 2.7 Identify limitations in building packs and seek assistance in line with site procedures.
3. Strap and wrap packs
  • 3.1 Strap and wrap finished packs in line with organisational procedures.
  • 3.2 Avoid wastage of strapping and packaging materials and maximise use of recycled materials.
  • 3.3 Tighten straps to prevent component slippage, strap breakage and damage.
  • 3.4 Dispose of excess packing material in line with environmental protection practices.
  • 3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.
