Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to complete hand stitching on textile articles made from heavier weight fabrics such as canvas and sail products. Hand stitching may be required for repairs, modifications or new work and involve tasks like stitching damaged seams, gussets or reinforcements. For hand stitching of garments and lighter weight fabrics please refer to MSTCL2022 Provide hand sewing and finishing support.This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with pre-determined specifications and established procedures. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to stitch by hand
  • 1.1 Identify job and safe work requirements from work specifications and seek required clarification from relevant personnel
  • 1.2 Clear and clean work area and establish safe working environment in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Identify and action need for assistance to move and position work piece based on safe manual handling practices
  • 1.4 Select needles and thread based on job specifications, type of stitch and material to be sewn
  • 1.5 Check condition of needle to ensure it is sharp, clean and free from rust and dirt
2. Perform hand stitching
  • 2.1 Lay out article to be sewn on suitable surface or with required support in preparation for stitching process
  • 2.2 Use correct technique to begin, progress and complete stitching according to specifications, minimising thread waste
3. Check quality and finalise work
  • 3.1 Inspect completed work against specifications and quality standards
  • 3.2 Identify and mark any areas in need of re-work or rectification, perform re-work or arrange appropriate action
  • 3.3 Label or tag completed product and complete documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Store needles and threads in a dry and safe place and dispose of worn or damaged needles in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and workplace procedures
