Assessment must include evidence of the following knowledge and skills:
the advanced features and effects available within different lighting systems and how to use them
lighting control concepts used in various lighting systems
the main types of lanterns, including Profile, Fresnel, pebble/convex, flood, moving lanterns and PAR), their uses and operations (optical and mechanical) and accessories
the basic elements of lighting design and their impact on the set up of the lighting control system
problem-solving techniques and decision-making particularly in relation to the operation of lighting
various colour media used in lighting
DMX protocols
documentation and back-up systems used in conjunction with lighting control
relevant organisational and legislative occupational health and safety requirements, including working with electricity
basic understanding of electronics
literacy skills sufficient to both interpret and write performance documentation
numeracy skills sufficient to complete simple mathematical calculations and recall numbers for channel selection

The following evidence is critical to the judgement of competence in this unit:
ability to use the range of console features to set up, record and operate lighting cues and effects
knowledge of lighting control terms and dimmer control protocols, including those related to advanced features
effective communication and problem-solving skills
Method and context of assessment
The assessment context must provide for:
practical demonstration of skills through the set up, recording and operation of lighting cues and effects for more than one production
involvement of and interaction with a production team to reflect the collaborative nature of the production process
use of industry-current equipment
Assessment may incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of essential underpinning knowledge, and might include:
evaluation of lighting effects produced by the candidate
evaluation of reports prepared by the candidate on the processes undertaken to produce lighting for a given set of requirements
case studies projects to develop lighting for different types of production
oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of equipment features
review of portfolios of evidence or third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
Assessment methods should closely reflect workplace demands and the needs of particular groups (eg people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties such as speakers of languages other than English, remote communities and those with interrupted schooling).
