Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to carry out daily inspections on a mobile crane, in compliance with licence/permit requirements, regulations and work requirements in a variety of operational contexts.It includes planning daily inspections, preparing and conducting pre-start operations and safety checks, and completing workplace documentation entries.This unit applies to daily inspections on mobile crane and is limited to lubrication, fluid, filter and accessory changing and checks for cracks, surface or structural faults or other damage.Work is performed with limited or minimum supervision.People achieving competence in this unit must hold the relevant high risk work licence prior to undertaking mobile crane operation, dogging or rigging work.Work must be carried out in compliance with the relevant state/territory authority mobile crane operations licence/permit requirements and regulations, codes of practice, rules and/or guidelines.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan daily inspection
  • 1.1 Tags, logbooks and crane manufacturer information are read prior to commencing operation, and previously identified and manufacturer recommendations are confirmed
  • 1.2 Maintenance schedules are read and maintenance tasks are confirmed to match schedule
  • 1.3 Competent maintenance personnel are consulted to confirm step-by-step procedure is worked out to minimise time delays and to sequence maintenance processes consistent with manufacturer recommendations
2 Prepare for pre-start checks
  • 2.1 Hazards are identified and risks are eliminated or control measures selected and implemented in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Required tools, consumables and equipment are identified and suitable
  • 2.3 Equipment is inspected for visible faults and loose or damaged components
3 Conduct pre-start operations and safety checks
  • 3.1 Fluid levels are checked and adjusted in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Mechanical components are checked to ensure attachments and tensions are secure in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Own work and crane system operations are checked to ensure crane’s operational condition is in accordance with manufacturer specifications and in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Tools, equipment and unused consumables are returned to appropriate locations and waste is disposed of in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.5 Mobile crane is monitored during operations in accordance with workplace procedures
4 Complete logbook entries
  • 4.1 Accurate reporting of daily inspection results is completed in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.2 Potential fault conditions are reported to appropriate personnel
