Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a light vehicle underground in the resources and infrastructure industries.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements may apply to this unit and can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for light vehicle operations underground
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to operate a light vehicle underground
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Plan vehicle operations with consideration to the work activity, route, passengers and equipment safety
  • 1.6 Communicate verbally and in writing to relevant personnel using approved underground communication methods
  • 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for emergency situations
2. Drive light vehicle underground
  • 2.1 Conduct prestart checks and start-up checks on the medium vehicle and ancillary equipment according to workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Operate the equipment according to manufacturer specifications, and consider the immediate environment/conditions, recommended speed, engine capability, limitations and capacity of equipment
  • 2.3 Monitor equipment performance indicators/gauges and ensure efficient vehicle operations
  • 2.4 Operate, steer, manoeuvre and position the vehicle and equipment according to manufacturer specifications
  • 2.5 Identify and respond to hazardous and/or emergency driving situations according to workplace procedures
  • 2.6 Process vehicle written maintenance records according to workplace procedures
  • 2.7 Carry out shut down/parking procedures according to workplace procedures
3. Carry out operator maintenance and housekeeping
  • 3.1 Carry out equipment inspections to identify faults according to manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Carry out routine operational servicing, lubrication and housekeeping activities according to workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Adhere to site underground breakdown procedures
  • 3.4 Carry out minor maintenance and repairs according to manufacturer specifications
  • 3.5 Provide operator support during preparation for, and conduct of, major maintenance tasks
  • 3.6 Report defective or irregular performance to relevant personnel according to workplace procedures
  • 3.7 Process vehicle written maintenance records according to workplace procedures
