This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct spreader operations in Coal Mining.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to conduct spreader operations
  • 1.1. Access, interpret and apply spreader operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2. Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data
  • 1.3. Select and wear personal appropriate protective equipment
  • 1.4. Identify, address and report potential hazards and risks
  • 1.5. Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Operate spreader
  • 2.1. Coordinate activities with others prior to commencing, during and on completion of the work activity
  • 2.2. Carry out pre-start, start-up, park-up and shutdown procedures
  • 2.3. Operate spreader controls to place burden
  • 2.4. Act or report on monitoring systems and alarms
  • 2.5. Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
  • 2.6. Complete the work plan
3. Relocate spreader
  • 3.1. Receive and confirm route and location plan, if necessary by site inspection
  • 3.2. Complete ground preparation
  • 3.3. Carry out cable location and handling
  • 3.4. Coordinate relocation issues, including support equipment and personnel
4. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 4.1. Prepare machine for maintenance
  • 4.2. Conduct inspection and fault finding techniques and processes
  • 4.3. Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
  • 4.4. Process written maintenance records
