Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare and mask aircraft and aircraft components for coating removal and to remove coatings using chemical and mechanical methods during scheduled or unscheduled maintenance. Work may be performed individually or as part of a team.Applications include fixed and rotary wing aircraft and aircraft components. The unit is used in workplaces that operate under the airworthiness regulatory systems of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and the Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA).Any other relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify the appropriate coating
  • 1.1 Identify coating removal task from maintenance documentation and enterprise procedures
  • 1.2 Identify materials and tools to be used for coating removal from enterprise procedures and maintenance publications
  • 1.3 Match aircraft or component with relevant maintenance documentation
2. Prepare for coating removal
  • 2.1 Identify and comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements, use material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and check personal protective equipment (PPE) for correct fit and function
  • 2.2 Assemble required materials and tools for coating removal in accordance with maintenance manual
  • 2.3 Prepare access to the aircraft in accordance with standard enterprise procedures
  • 2.4 Determine masking requirements, including barrier materials, using enterprise procedures and maintenance publications
  • 2.5 Apply required masking, including barrier materials, to relevant areas and sensitive components in accordance with requirements
3. Remove coating
  • 3.1 Observe environmental requirements during the coating removal process in accordance with enterprise procedures
  • 3.2 Apply chemical strippers in accordance with enterprise and chemical handling procedures
  • 3.3 Remove coating using mechanical techniques in accordance with enterprise procedures and maintenance manuals
  • 3.4 Clean surfaces of all chemical residue and mechanical media in accordance with enterprise procedures and maintenance manuals
  • 3.5 Remove masking, including barrier materials, and clean surfaces in accordance with enterprise procedures
4. Clean up work area and maintain equipment
  • 4.1 Collect and store materials that can be reused in accordance with enterprise procedures
  • 4.2 Remove and dispose of or store waste materials in accordance with legislative, regulatory and enterprise procedures
  • 4.3 Clean equipment in accordance with enterprise procedures or manufacturer’s instructions while observing all relevant WHS requirements, including the use of MSDS and items of PPE
  • 4.4 Check equipment for serviceability and deal with unserviceable items in accordance with enterprise procedures
  • 4.5 Clean and maintain tools in accordance with enterprise procedures
  • 4.6 Clean work area and inspect for serviceable condition in accordance with enterprise procedures
