Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to conduct an assessment and determine the suitability of a proposed building design for a bushfire prone area, and to provide recommendations consistent with the Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating for the proposed site.The unit applies to individuals who are paraprofessional workers and have technical and theoretical knowledge of bushfire impact on property development. They demonstrate autonomy, judgement and responsibility in a range of contexts within broad but established parameters. They possess communication and analytical skills to determine and transmit solutions to complex problems.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare resources required to gather site data.
  • 1.1 Access and review maps and plans and locate site for building design.
  • 1.2 Access site and identify planned location of building design from plans.
  • 1.3 Obtain and verify BAL for site and planned building location.
  • 1.4 Access and review jurisdictional plans for bushfire management for site location.
  • 1.5 Review, legislation, codes of practice and standards relative to construction in bushfire prone areas.
2 Assess building design for compliance with legislation, regulations and standards for bushfire prone areas.
  • 2.1 Investigate building design features from plans and specifications.
  • 2.2 Reconcile the building design requirements against jurisdictional plans for bushfire management, regulatory requirements and standards for BAL of site.
  • 2.3 Assess compliance of building design against specific BAL rating and standards and jurisdictional plans for bushfire management for site.
  • 2.4 Identify and record non-compliance of design.
3 Report findings of assessment to client.
  • 3.1 Collate assessments from plans and specification.
  • 3.2 Develop recommendations for changes to building design and features.
  • 3.3 Prepare a report outlining assessments and recommendations.
  • 3.4 Present report with recommendations to client for feedback.
  • 3.5 Review and respond to feedback from client.
  • 3.6 Amend report according to feedback.
  • 3.7 Finalise report and distribute to client according to workplace procedures.
  • 3.8 Maintain records and file reports and recommendations according to workplace procedures.
