Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to examine building design project sites and surveyor’s drawings to identify contours and measurements, existing conditions, structures, features and services and neighbourhood characteristics. It includes determining site orientation and layout, access and egress points, and existing utilities and services infrastructure, and producing measured drawings. It includes using basic measuring equipment and recording and interpreting data. The unit does not apply to construction Type A buildings. Building classifications and construction Types are set out in the National Construction Code (NCC).This unit is suitable for drafters and building designers who apply technical and theoretical knowledge and skills to building design work tasks. This unit forms part of the licensing requirements for people engaged in building design in some states and territories. For further information, check with the relevant regulatory authority.
Notes
Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare to carry out site measure-up.
- 1.1 Plan site inspection tasks for small-scale building design project with reference to relevant site information and workplace requirements.
- 1.2 Identify and document work health and safety (WHS) hazards and implement required controls.
- 1.3 Identify required devices and equipment for measure-up.
- 1.4 Perform desk-top assessment prior to site visit using online resources to obtain relevant site information.
2 Assess and record site and building information.
- 2.1 Establish context of development by identifying relationship of site to adjoining properties and surrounding environment.
- 2.2 Note physical characteristics and local climate conditions of site.
- 2.3 Produce field sketches which accurately record site and building elements that are transferable to accurate, scaled measured drawing format.
- 2.4 Take digital images of relevant site and building elements to assist in development of accurate scaled and measured drawings.
- 2.5 Use basic measuring equipment to measure and record accurate linear site dimensions according to workplace requirements.
3 Produce measured drawings and documentation for existing conditions.
- 3.1 Collate site analysis data to determine site features, existing conditions and contour levels.
- 3.2 Clearly and accurately document results of analysis for interpretation by others.
- 3.3 Apply site survey and site analysis data to measured drawings.
- 3.4 Produce accurate representation of site and building elements for measured drawings.
4 Use land surveyor’s drawings to plot contours and cut and fill areas.
- 4.1 Examine site survey from registered land surveyor to plot spot levels.
- 4.2 Interpolate contour lines from spot level values and plot on site plan.
- 4.3 Measure or calculate cut and fill areas and plot in plan and section drawings.
