Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop control of the range and scope of one’s own voice. This includes developing techniques to enhance vocal quality and health, as well as strategies for developing technical skills required to competently perform a range of repertoire.The unit applies to those who perform as vocalists and are developing competence to perform in public. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to use voice
  • 1.1 Identify physical problems that can affect voice and discuss with required personnel ways to minimise their occurrence
  • 1.2 Discuss with required personnel strategies for addressing problems with voice if they arise
  • 1.3 Develop and use voice warm-up and warm-down routines for practice sessions and performances
  • 1.4 Research and identify repertoire options that best fit own voice and selected vocal style
2. Practice vocal techniques
  • 2.1 Identify and document personal goals and development areas in consultation with required personnel
  • 2.2 Confirm performance requirements and context with required personnel
  • 2.3 Listen to work of other singers and identify techniques to be applied to own performance
  • 2.4 Plan practice strategies for overcoming technical challenges in consultation with required personnel
  • 2.5 Learn and practise a set of exercises or studies aimed at developing technical fluency in identified areas of weakness2.6 Memorise lyrics and repertoire for performance
  • 2.7 Seek feedback on own skill development during practice sessions from required personnel and adjust focus of practice sessions as required
3. Perform pieces
  • 3.1 Listen critically while singing and adjust intonation and musical techniques as required
  • 3.2 Perform songs by memory and with melodic and rhythmic precision, attention to dynamic range and variations in techniques as required
  • 3.3 Perform songs following agreed tempi and musical markings where required
  • 3.4 Maintain correct posture, body position and care of voice in line with work health and safety (WHS) requirements
  • 3.5 Enhance emotional content of songs in performance using vocal articulation, intonation and tone colours
4. Evaluate vocal technique development
  • 4.1 Evaluate own performance and development of vocal techniques and note areas for improvement
  • 4.2 Seek and use feedback from others and develop strategies for improving own performance and skill development
