This unit covers the competency required to conduct tactical questioning within an operational environment. It also covers searching the detainee prior to questioning.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for tactical questioning
- 1.1 Information requirements are identified to target questioning
- 1.2 Items belonging to the detainee are examined to establish lines of questioning
- 1.3 Questions are prepared in accordance with organisational requirements
- 1.4 Support is sought for language and cultural issues
- 1.5 Secure site is selected and prepared in accordance with standard procedures
- 1.6 Team members are briefed on their roles during the search and questioning in accordance with standard procedures
2. Conduct search of detainee
- 2.1 Detainee is prepared and escorted to search and questioning site in accordance with standard procedures
- 2.2 Detainee is searched in accordance with standard procedures
3. Conduct tactical questioning
- 3.1 Appropriateatmosphere is created and maintained throughout the activity
- 3.2 Questions are asked of the detainee using appropriate questioning technique in accordance with standard procedures
- 3.3 Line of questioning is developed based on responses
- 3.4 Questioning technique is adjusted based on responses
- 3.5 Legal requirements are identified and applied during the activity
- 3.6 Work health and safety (WHS) requirements and safety precautions are applied throughout the activity
4. Finalise tactical questioning
- 4.1 Responses are recorded and documentation is completed in accordance with standard procedures
- 4.2 Detainee is classified in accordance with standard procedures
- 4.3 Information gained during search and questioning is provided to appropriate stakeholders in a timely manner
