Equivalencies: This unit of competence incorporates units 5.7a of the National Metal And Engineering competency standards

Heating, cutting or gouging equipment may include, oxy acetylene, plasma, carbon arc, thermal lance.
Materials may include, ferrous, non ferrous and non metallic of various thicknesses and types.
Methods may include, manual or automatic methods for cutting and heating, and may include hand held or self propelled straight line cutters. Heating methods may be by oxy-acetylene, oxy fuel gas, oxy-hydrogen etc.
Maintenance may refer to repairing damaged leads, hand and earth pieces; cleaning and checks on portable welders
Work completion details may include plant and maintenance records, job cards, check sheets, on device labelling updates, reporting and/or documenting equipment defects
Work site environment may be affected by nearby plant or processes, eg chemical, heat, dust, noise, gas and oil
Critical aspects of evidence
The knowledge and application of relevant sections of: Occupational, health and safety legislation; Statutory legislation; Enterprise/site safety procedures; Enterprise/site emergency procedures
Preparation and planning of work
Heating, cutting and gouging procedures

Context of assessment
Competency Standards should be assessed in the workplace or simulated workplace and under the normal range of workplace conditions.
Assessment of this unit will be supported with documentary evidence, by means of endorsement stating type and application of work.
