Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to implement intensive production systems.The unit applies to individuals who apply specialist skills and knowledge to implement intensive production systems. This includes applying and communicating non-routine technical solutions to predictable and unpredictable problems.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace, and animal welfare legislation, regulations, standards and guidelines, and sustainability and biosecurity practices.In addition to legal responsibilities, all units of competency dealing with animals in the AHC Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management Training Package have the requirements for animals to be handled humanely to minimise stress and discomfort.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for production operations
  • 1.1 Identify and obtain documents within the workplace that detail the requirements of the production program
  • 1.2 Assess and calculate the resources required for the production operations from the product to be produced, the available timelines, the available resources, and the types of housing and feeding infrastructure
  • 1.3 Determine measurable indicators, specifications and targets based on the production program and type of housing and feeding infrastructure
  • 1.4 Hold discussions with operational personnel and management to discuss the production program
  • 1.5 Identify, seek and obtain approvals required for the production operations
2. Communicate production program and complete administration activities
  • 2.1 Coordinate, schedule and communicate materials and equipment requirements according to the prepared plan
  • 2.2 Identify hazards and assess risks in the workplace, and implement control measures to manage risks according to workplace health and safety procedures
  • 2.3 Communicate details of the procedures, tools and personal protective equipment to be used, and records to be kept with operational personnel and seek confirmation
  • 2.4 Complete documentation and records according to workplace requirements
  • 2.5 Provide advice to operational personnel and contractors during production operations
3. Manage livestock and production environment
  • 3.1 Monitor livestock for signs of ill health or injuries, and record and report observations
  • 3.2 Monitor housing and feeding infrastructure for signs of damage, wear and tear, and record and report observations
  • 3.3 Supervise examination of dead livestock for evidence of disease through correct post-mortem techniques and seek veterinary advice if required
  • 3.4 Assess and evaluate disease status of livestock, notify or report to appropriate personnel and seek veterinary assistance if required
  • 3.5 Monitor components of biosecurity procedures according to regulatory and industry standards and requirements
  • 3.6 Monitor and adjust aspects of the production system environment according to the production program
4. Manage effluent and waste
  • 4.1 Monitor effluent storage and disposal systems according to production program and manufacturer instructions
  • 4.2 Calculate, monitor and document volume and type of effluent
  • 4.3 Monitor the removal of waste and debris from the production environment
  • 4.4 Provide ongoing production environment maintenance program throughout all seasons
  • 4.5 Monitor and report on the regulatory and legislative requirements associated with the production program
5. Monitor and adjust production operations
  • 5.1 Monitor operational tasks to ensure compliance with production plan and safe work practices
  • 5.2 Monitor production operations to ensure that environment regulatory requirements are being observed and followed
  • 5.3 Communicate with operational personnel and contractors to ensure smooth operation and progress
  • 5.4 Check that all workplace documentation and records are completed according to workplace, regulatory and industry requirements
  • 5.5 Take corrective action where required
  • 5.6 Collate and store documentation and records according to workplace procedures
  • 5.7 Review and document recommended changes to production program for future implementation
