Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to supervise operations in drilling. It prepares individuals to initiate drilling operations, and to monitor, adjust, communicate and report on the execution of drilling operations. It applies to those working in supervisory or technical specialist roles. They generally perform tasks involving a broad range of varied activities most of which are complex and non-routine.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for supervising drilling operations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply drilling operations documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Access, interpret, clarify and confirm the application of the specific task information for the required outcomes
  • 1.3 Prepare an operational plan, in consultation, which makes best use of available resources
  • 1.4 Identify training requirements of team members and develop training plans
2. Initiate drilling operations
  • 2.1 Acquire and make available the necessary resources
  • 2.2 Issue instructions to team members and others involved
  • 2.3 Implement training plans and confirm training plans are followed
3. Monitor, adjust, communicate and report on the execution of drilling operations
  • 3.1 Monitor site operations according to work requirements
  • 3.2 Initiate adjustments to drilling practices or the operations plan according to work requirements
  • 3.3 Provide advice to team members to overcome operational problems encountered during the execution of operations
  • 3.4 Confirm plant, equipment and tools maintenance requirements are carried out and recorded according to workplace procedures
  • 3.5 Confirm reports are completed and submitted according to workplace procedures
  • 3.6 Recommend changes to improve the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of operations
