Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to design and manufacture registration rims for removable prostheses.This unit applies to work in dental technology.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Select and prepare materials
  • 1.1 Read and interpret the work order
  • 1.2 Select appropriate material for the base
  • 1.3 Select appropriate material for the rim
  • 1.4 Prepare model to enable appropriate application of selected base material
2. Construct base
  • 2.1 Apply selected base material to model
  • 2.2 Process base material according to type of material selected
  • 2.3 Trim base material to peripheral contours of model and appropriate landmarks
3. Construct registration rim
  • 3.1 Construct rim to industry standard in selected material
  • 3.2 Trim rim to prescribed dimensions and appropriate landmarks
  • 3.3 Smooth and polish rim according to material chosen
  • 3.4 Decontaminate the registration rim according to infection control guidelines
  • 3.5 Dry the registration rim and place in a sealed container for dispatch
