Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to develop and modify trade waste policies and plans.It includes planning, developing, modifying, reviewing and refining policies and plans for trade waste activities relating to liquid waste discharge to wastewater collection systems. It also includes applying and complying with relevant legislation, regulations, industry standards and workplace policies and procedures. This unit applies to those working as leaders in water organisations with responsibility for the management of trade waste policies and plans. Those undertaking this unit would work autonomously, leading staff, while performing sophisticated tasks in a range of familiar contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for trade waste management
- 1.1 Identify and review relevant provisions of trade waste legislation, standards and enterprise policies
- 1.2 Document trade waste policies and procedures
- 1.3 Identify wastewater quality parameters generated by major industries
- 1.4 Consider information about known impacts, risk assessments and control procedures in preparing plans
- 1.5 Document responsibilities and accountabilities according to workplace procedures
2 Develop and modify trade waste policies and plans
- 2.1 Conduct community, workplace and stakeholder consultation
- 2.2 Address issues raised through consultation and incorporate issues relevant to policy in policy development
- 2.3 Identify and explain trade waste processes to stakeholders including treatment and disposal processes together with the required workplace procedures and relevant environmental factors
- 2.4 Develop and modify contingency plans for major trade waste industries
- 2.5 Summarise issues identified by reviews and audits in trade waste policies and plans
- 2.6 Prepare and present trade waste policies and plans
3 Review and refine trade waste policies and plans
- 3.1 Review trade waste policies against established objectives, policies and plans
- 3.2 Review policies and plans through consultation, against prevailing stakeholder expectations
- 3.3 Modify policies and plans to include identified and required changes
- 3.4 Benchmark policies, systems and plans against other water utilities
