Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to construct typical components for costumes worn in screen, media and entertainment industry productions. It involves the preparation, production and documentation of costume development techniques used for production.The unit applies to those who integrate individualised sewing and construction techniques with a variety of other independent classic or standard techniques common to many costume designs. Emphasis in construction is on functionality, durability, wearer comfort and compliance with design specifications.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to construct costume components
- 1.1 Identify costume components, functionality and requirements in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Confirm costume specifications and production schedule
- 1.3 Select construction techniques to design each costume
- 1.4 Plan sequence of operations for costume construction
- 1.5 Select and prepare machinery and equipment
2. Produce costume components
- 2.1 Follow planned sequence of construction operations and seek assistance from others as required
- 2.2 Follow work health and safety (WHS) procedures and manufacturer’s specifications during construction
- 2.3 Handle different combinations of fabrics during the construction process
- 2.4 Use a range of costume construction techniques to produce sample components that meet quality and functional requirements
- 2.5 Seek feedback on samples from required personnel and agree on modifications or improvements
- 2.6 Finish costume components within agreed timeframes
3. Document costume construction techniques
- 3.1 Compile work samples for future reference
- 3.2 Document techniques and methods used to construct samples
- 3.3 Produce a reference portfolio which includes completed components and notes on the sequence of operations
- 3.4 Reflect on process of constructing components and note areas for future improvement
