Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to teach eligible heavy vehicle learner drivers from diverse backgrounds how to develop, monitor and maintain safe heavy vehicle driving strategies and behaviours. This unit applies to heavy vehicle driving instructors.It includes recognising and dealing with behavioural barriers to learning, developing heavy vehicle operation and control skills, and interpreting and applying regulatory requirements and road law expertise.It also includes developing higher-order cognitive and technical skills, such as hazard perception, correctly reading a driving environment and responding appropriately, exercising risk management strategies that contribute to safe heavy vehicle driving behaviours, and meeting community expectations.Work is performed without supervision. Developing safe heavy vehicle driving behaviours in others involves the application of adult learning principles, instructional methods, training competence and experience, higher-order heavy vehicle driver expertise, navigation skills, road law expertise, routine procedures and regulatory requirements across a range of operational situations and a variety of driving contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1 Demonstrate applicable safe heavy vehicle driving rules and regulations to learner drivers
- 1.1 Relevant rules and regulations for each heavy vehicle driving task are identified and clarified when driving with a heavy vehicle learner driver
- 1.2 Road rules are explained and demonstrated to heavy vehicle learner driver
2 Demonstrate low-risk heavy vehicle driving strategies to learner drivers
- 2.1 Proactive driving techniques that keep heavy vehicle driver at a low-risk level are demonstrated
- 2.2 Low-risk driving behaviours are demonstrated consistently
- 2.3 Heavy vehicle operation and control skills and knowledge to minimise risks are explained and demonstrated to heavy vehicle learner driver
- 2.4 Load placement and load restraints are explained and demonstrated to heavy vehicle learner driver
- 2.5 Checking a vehicle/trailer is demonstrated to heavy vehicle learner driver
3 Deliver training on safe heavy vehicle driving principles
- 3.1 Training objectives and methods are planned and documented
- 3.2 Training is conducted in a safe and accessible environment
- 3.3 Specific needs for training are identified and confirmed through observation and evaluation of heavy vehicle learner driver capabilities
- 3.4 Information about safe heavy vehicle driving principles is made available to heavy vehicle learner driver and is explained clearly to heavy vehicle learner driver
- 3.5 Principles behind low-risk driving are explained clearly to heavy vehicle learner driver
4 Monitor and maintain safe heavy vehicle driving behaviours of learner drivers

5 Evaluate learner drivers on their safe heavy vehicle driving competence
- 5.1 Evidence requirements are specified to show consistent achievement of learner driver safe heavy vehicle driving competence
- 5.2 Evaluation methods, processes and procedures are communicated clearly to learner driver and are applied consistently in accordance with state/territory regulatory authority licensing requirements
