Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to correctly and safely operate an incinerator.This unit applies to workers with a range of well-developed skills where some discretion and judgement is required. Workers will take responsibility for their own outputs under predetermined guidelines and may participate in supervised work teams. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare incinerator for operation
  • 1.1 Undertake incinerator maintenance according to manufacturer instructions
  • 1.2 Check the components of the incinerator for correct functioning
  • 1.3 Determine potential environmental risks associated with incinerator operations
2. Prepare waste for incineration
  • 2.1 Identify waste for incineration
  • 2.2 Use personal protective equipment according to organisational requirements
  • 2.3 Check waste for products that should not be placed into an incinerator and remove
  • 2.4 Load waste into incinerator according to organisation policy and procedure and manufacturer instructions
3. Operate incinerator
  • 3.1 Activate incinerator according to manufacturer instructions
  • 3.2 Identify and rectify problems with waste incineration
  • 3.3 Complete documentation according to organisation policy and procedure
  • 3.4 Shut down the incinerator according to manufacturer instructions
  • 3.5 Take and document environmental measurements according to state/territory and local government regulations
  • 3.6 Notify the appropriate person of any breaches of environmental measures or operating policy
  • 3.7 Dispose of waste from the incinerator according to state/territory and local regulations
