Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to perform slipping operations on marine vessels, including work/pleasure craft and yachts appropriate to the capacity of the slipping facility.Where travel lifts, forklifts and/or cranes are required to be used unit MEM11010 Operate mobile load shifting equipment or other appropriate units should also be selected.Where boat is to be moored using the vessel's engine or with the assistance of a work boat unit MEM50009 Safely operate a mechanically powered recreational boat should be selected.Where skills for drawing interpretation, marking out and constructing structures for slipping are required appropriate units should also be selected.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Determine job requirements
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • 1.4 Determine set-up of slipping facility to suit vessel in accordance with organisational and legislative requirements
2 Set up slipping facilities
  • 2.1 Take measurements to suit hull structure, where applicable
  • 2.2 Position hull support bearers to suit hull structure, where applicable
3 Perform hauling out procedures
  • 3.1 Position slipping facilities to suit slipping application
  • 3.2 Position vessel to suit slipping set-up
  • 3.3 Select vessel retaining ropes and secure in accordance with slipping facility and vessel retaining requirements
  • 3.4 Ground/level vessel for positioning of hull support
  • 3.5 Position hull support mechanics
  • 3.6 Carry out safety checks of vessel stability
4 Perform launching procedures
  • 4.1 Check vessel support and slip devices for safety
  • 4.2 Apply pre-launch safety checks for vessel seaworthiness
  • 4.3 Carry out launch practices according to standard procedure and organisational requirements
  • 4.4 Re-position hull support devices to prevent obstruction during vessel removal
  • 4.5 Moor vessel using appropriate restraints, where applicable
