Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to distribute tailings in coal mining, metalliferous mining and extractive industries. It involves completing dust suppression and extraction operations, monitoring bunded areas and managing overflows.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to distribute tailings
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work instructions
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to distribute tailings and confirm work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Coordinate and communicate activities with others according to site requirements within scope of own role
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
  • 1.5 Select and obtain equipment for work activities and check for faults
  • 1.6 Identify potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, implement control measures within scope of own role, and escalate where required
  • 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
  • 1.8 Manage dust using approved suppression and extraction methods
  • 1.9 Prepare site, position and stabilise equipment according to job and site requirements
2. Monitor and disperse tailings
  • 2.1 Carry out start-up procedures and complete start-up checks according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 2.2 Read and interpret data from equipment indicators to determine deposition parameters
  • 2.3 Operate plant according to manufacturer specifications and job requirements
  • 2.4 Monitor plant for risks and hazards, implement control measures within scope of own role, and escalate where required
  • 2.5 Adjust equipment to approved operating parameters and optimise performance to meet tailings quality targets
  • 2.6 Control feed to equipment, monitor bunded areas and manage overflows according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 2.7 Report any spillages according to work safety requirements
  • 2.8 Complete recording and reporting according to site and job requirements
  • 2.9 Confirm tailings meet fill plant operating parameters
  • 2.10 Flush lines to remove all material according to job requirements
  • 2.11 Shutdown or isolate equipment according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 2.12 Perform post shutdown or isolation checks according to site requirements
3. Carry out clean up and equipment maintenance, and update records
  • 3.1 Clear work area and dispose of and recycle materials according to site requirements
  • 3.2 Carry out operator maintenance and servicing according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 3.3 Manage and report hazards and maintain a safe working environment
  • 3.4 Complete written records and reports according to site requirements
