Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide deck support for conveyor-car high wall mining operations in coal mining. It includes loading, unloading, staging and positioning conveyorcars and connecting conveyorcar cables. It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.No licensing, legislation, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Plan and prepare for deck support operations
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required for conveyor-car high wall mining
  • 1.3 Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data required to complete allocated work
  • 1.4 Identify, address and report potential hazards and risks according to site requirements
  • 1.5 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
  • 1.6 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
2. Load and unload cars
  • 2.1 Communicate work activities with others within scope of own role
  • 2.2 Carry out prestart and start-up procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 2.3 Stage and position cars according to job requirements
  • 2.4 Carry out cable connections according to job requirements
3. Operate cars
  • 3.1 Remove surface dust from cars according to site requirements
  • 3.2 Pin and unpin cars according to job requirements
  • 3.3 Complete work plan according to job requirements and manufacturer specifications
  • 3.4 Carry out shutdown and secure equipment procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
4. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 4.1 Prepare machine for maintenance according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 4.2 Conduct inspections and fault finding procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 4.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 4.4 Complete maintenance records according to site requirements
5. Carry out housekeeping activities
  • 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to site requirements
  • 5.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, check suitability for use, and address/report issues according to site requirements
