Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to officiate surf life saving at the advanced level. This unit focuses on the ability to apply the rules of surf life saving, use communication strategies, demonstrate correct positioning and manage results of advanced level surf life saving competitions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Apply the rules of surf life saving at the advanced level.
- 1.1. Assess suitability of competitors and conditions for the event according to the organisation's rules and regulations, requirements of the advanced level event, relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
- 1.2. Assess external influences, safety aspects and risks prior to commencement of the event.
- 1.3. Observe the event, with minimal disruption, to ensure competitors and officials are operating according to the organisation's rules and regulations.
- 1.4. Identify and document breaches of rules and regulations and address these according to organisational policies and procedures.
- 1.5. Interpret and apply the rules and regulations according to current guidelines and national trends of surf life saving.
- 1.6. Make consistent decisions based on relevant information, fairness, equity and participant safety.
2. Use communication strategies to officiate surf life saving.
- 2.1. Communicate decisions and manage the outcomes of decision making while officiating the event according to rules and regulations of surf life saving.
- 2.2. Explain and convey decisions to competitors, other officials and spectators.
- 2.3. Respond to competitors and other officials according to the given situation.
- 2.4. Use auditory devices and signals to clearly convey decisions to competitors when officiating.
- 2.5. Provide and receive formal and informal feedback in a positive and constructive manner.
- 2.6. Implement changes to improve the quality of officiating according to informal discussions with relevant persons.
3. Demonstrate positioning skills to officiate surf life saving events.
- 3.1. Adopt appropriate position to officiate advanced level events according to the rules and regulations.
- 3.2. Identify and document external influences and conditions for adjusting position when officiating advanced level events.
- 3.3. Move to maintain optimal position to view events and record results according to the rules and regulations.
- 3.4. Adopt position to record results for beach and water events.
4. Manage the results of a surf life saving competition.
- 4.1. Interpret and document results as directed by the organising body.
- 4.2. Record and process the results of an event or competition according to organisational policies and procedures.
- 4.3. Document decisions received about disqualifications and penalties and communicate to participants affected by the decisions according to the rules and regulations of the organising body.
- 4.4. Communicate information and results to all individuals within the set timeframe specified by the organising body.

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of the rules and regulations of surf life saving as they apply to events at the advanced level

a portfolio containing records of results and documentation of decisions regarding disqualifications and penalties where required
third-party reports from a supervisor detailing officiating performance.
