This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to match, stitch, tape or glue slices of veneer in readiness for bonding to panel products.The unit applies to production operators and technicians who match and join veneer in a forest and wood products factory setting.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for joining veneer
  • 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
  • 1.3 Obtain type and quantity of veneer for matching and joining from veneer production process.
  • 1.4 Select matching and joining process in line with work order.
2. Match and join veneer
  • 2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.
  • 2.2 Complete pre start-up equipment checks to ensure operational effectiveness.
  • 2.3 Set machine functions and feed rate for optimal product recovery.
  • 2.4 Select joining method in line with veneer to be matched.
  • 2.5 Inspect sheets visually and match veneer to specification.
  • 2.6 Clip sheets to provide clean edges and join in line with work order.
  • 2.7 Assess veneer visually throughout joining process for strength and production defects.
3. Redistribute material
  • 3.1 Assess joins and grade veneer in line with organisational procedures and industry standards.
  • 3.2 Direct material to storage or processing operations in line with organisational procedures.
  • 3.3 Dispose of sub-standard material and excess glue in line with environmental protection practices.
  • 3.4 Clean work area and store unused glue in line with organisational safety procedures.
  • 3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.
