This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct materials transfer vehicle operations in Civil Construction.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to conduct transfer vehicle operations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply transfer vehicle operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Confirm environmental protection and safety requirements
  • 1.6 Obtain, interpret and implement traffic management signage requirements
  • 1.7 Select and check for faults plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • 1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Transfer materials
  • 2.1 Establish communication with other plant operators and personnel
  • 2.2 Fit feeder bin
  • 2.3 Perform start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
  • 2.4 Test vehicle controls and functions before commencing operations
  • 2.5 Position transfer vehicle to deliver asphalt to paver without spillage
  • 2.6 Direct delivery truck into position with the materials transfer vehicle
  • 2.7 Receive asphalt from delivery truck into the materials transfer vehicle hoppers and monitor
  • 2.8 Deliver asphalt to paver smoothly and without impact that would cause bounce in the paver
  • 2.9 Maintain speed as directed by paver operator during transfer operations
3. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 3.1 Park safely, shut down and prepare the material transfer vehicle for maintenance
  • 3.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
  • 3.3 Remove defective parts and replace
  • 3.4 Carry out regular programmed maintenance tasks
  • 3.5 Clean out equipment between changeover of product and/or at the end of the work period
4. Clean up
  • 4.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
  • 4.2 Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
  • 4.3 Carry out housekeeping requirements
