Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform music from written notation. It applies to individuals working as instrumentalists and vocalists who are extending their ability to interpret notated music conventions and apply music reading skills to suit different performance contexts. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Practise notated music
- 1.1 Discuss the selection of repertoire suitable for practice and performance with appropriate people
- 1.2 Analyse the musical conventions for chord sequences and music systems, rhythms, time signatures and beat patterns relevant to own instrument or voice
- 1.3 Practise reading music with accurate realisation of rhythmic, melodic and harmonic ideas according to own instrument or voice
- 1.4 Adhere to the required conventions of form and music structures
- 1.5 Interpret dynamics and expression marks
- 1.6 Practise accuracy of intonation
- 1.7 Apply knowledge of style and genre to playing or singing own pieces/songs
- 1.8 Seek guidance from appropriate personnel, and adjust techniques as required
2. Present performances of notated music
- 2.1 Perform melodic and rhythmic structures of music accurately
- 2.2 Perform harmonic structures where required
- 2.3 Demonstrate appropriate stylistic conventions
- 2.4 Apply suitable tuning for selected music as required
- 2.5 Listen critically, and adjust own performance in the context of a group performance as required
- 2.6 Recognise any errors in performance, and mitigate appropriately to ensure continuity of performance
- 2.7 Observe work health and safety (WHS) principles relevant to reading music and performing
3. Enhance music reading skills
- 3.1 Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in music reading to inform practice goals
- 3.2 Explore suitable repertoire for further development of reading skills in consultation with appropriate people
