Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for work, lay a moisture vapour barrier and cut and fix timber battens or plywood before installing strip timber, which is not included in this unit. Battens may be used to either raise a floor or correct the level of a floor. The unit does not address nailing strip timber flooring or installing direct stick timber flooring.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training.They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install timber battens and plywood
  • 1.1 Interpret timber batten and plywood installation requirements from job instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
  • 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
  • 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Gather the moisture vapour barrier, timber battens or plywood, adhesives, trims and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
2. Lay the moisture vapour barrier
  • 2.1 Confirm the subfloor is clean and suitable for installing the moisture vapour barrier and timber battens or plywood, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Remove or undercut door jambs, cover trims and other joinery, and store for refitting or send for machining according to job instructions
  • 2.3 Fasten the moisture vapour barrier according to manufacturer instructions
3. Cut, fit and fasten timber battens and plywood
  • 3.1 Establish the starting point and mark out working lines
  • 3.2 Measure, mark and cut the timber battens or plywood according to job instructions to length and size, to minimise waste and joints, and to ensure an efficient, quality installation
  • 3.3 Fasten the timber battens or plywood according to the manufacturer instructions
  • 3.4 Adjust battens for levels according to job instructions
4. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
  • 4.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • 4.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
  • 4.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
  • 4.4 Complete task outcome documentation
